About d-fivers

When I learnt I would be the form-teacher of 5D (2003-2004), I had mixed feelings.  On the one hand, I worried that I would not teach them well; on the other hand, I was pleased to face a great challenge.  Then, I started thinking about a name for this class.  I received a lot of opinions and suggestions from students.  Several suggestions were made - 5dings, 5dears, 5deals and so on.  A sudden idea came to my mind and was finally adopted by most of them.  It's d-fivers.  I wanted to know the reasons why they chose this name.  The answer was amazing.  They all thought that the name was difficult to understand and it looked quite superior.  My God!  Actually, they didn't really consider the meaning of this word.  So, let me use a few words to explain.

Fivers are notes of five pounds.  It doesn't exist in Hong Kong, so not too many people know the meaning.  What do you think about fivers?  Is it really worth too much or too little?  When you consider its value, it would be difficult to judge.  Probably, a fiver is enough to buy 2 cheap McDonald's meals; but it's absolutely insufficient to buy luxury goods like computer, television set or brand name clothes.  I think fivers can be used to compare to students of 5D.  You can't say they perform very well academically.  From the teachers' point of view, they are "cheap".  However, you can neither say they are of no value.  After the summer camp in 2003, I discovered a group of enthusiastic youth.  They are wiling to give and sacrifice.  They put friendship at a high priority.  After appropriate guidance and assistance, I am confident that they will succeed in improving themselves and finally making contributions to society.

One more thing to mention.  Even you think a fiver is worth a little, you should not underestimate its power.  If all "fivers" join, unite and cooperate together, the energy generated could be out of your imagination.
